3 Elements of Argument

Logos - logic: facts, statistics, evidence, authority (Hard to argue against it because it's the truth) - less personal connection, boring Pathos - appeal to emotion, personal connection, strong response - lose credibility, less professional, too much turn people off Ethos - authority, credibility, character, people believe you, appear unbiased - lose focus of your argument The 3 elements need to be balanced and tied in equally in an argument.

After watching my speech, I thought I spoke very well but I could have been looking at the audience a little bit more. For next time, I'll try to do a better job memorizing my speech so that I can look up at the audience more. What I learned about the tendencies of giving a speech is that it is common to look down at the wrotinf more than you look at the ahdience and it is also very common for people to talk unclearly because they are nervous.

I Am

Remember in 5th grade when everyone was obsessed with Heeleys? Hanging out with your friends went from playing football, video games, etc. to going up and down your street on Heeleys. Well for those of you who don't know, Heeleys are shoes with one wheel on each shoe. They aren't loud and flashy like you would think. They look like skate shoes but a little bit more clunky. On the bottom of the shoe, there was a slot to put the wheel so when you weren't using them to roll around in, they wouldn't look ridiculous. Mine in particular were all black so they looked like any other normal shoe out there. Using Heeley's were very easy, you would lift your front foot up while controlling with the back foot. I used them all the time. I went down and back this one private street near my house, used them at the park, used them to get to my friends' house, etc. But one day, I went to a big hill and decided to take my Heeley adventures one step further. I starred down the hill and went for it without any hesitation. At first it was a smooth ride, but i started gaining ridiculous speed and lost control. Gravity pushed me off track and I fell, scraping my knee up causing blood to repeatingly gush from my knee. From that day on, my Heeley use decreased and I never went down another hill in them again. What I took from this experience was that I should be more cautious next time I try a big stunt such as going down a big hill on wheels with no helmet. This realization changed my thinking for a while, and when I say a while I mean less than 2 years. I got a bike for my birthday a couple years later and tried the same thing on a different hill, again without a helmet. In the long run, I think these experiences were worth it because it made me understand that it is important to take risks in life. Taking risks are important because if you don't take risks, you will never know your limit. You will never know how far you can go or how much potential you have. If you're not a risk taker, you'll work for someone who is.

What I have learned so far

In the last three weeks, I have learned a lot about the tendencies of bad public speakers compared to good public speakers. It seems like the most important things are being clear, eye contact with the audience, and getting the audience engaged. A lot of the bad ted talks we watched in class were different for several reason. One of the mistakes some of the speakers would make is laughing at their own jokes which made it awkward and the audience wasn’t engaged. The speaker would be smiling the whole time not making eye contact. He/she would then make a joke and would be the only one to laugh which is extremely cringe worthy. Other mistakes were saying “um” too much, looking at the ground, talking too soft, talking too fast or slow, slouching over, not getting the audience engaged, etc. It’s clearly important to develop good habits for public speaking such as having a good stance, standing up straight, a clear voice, humor, etc. For me, the easiest parts are having a clear loud voice, having a good stance, good posture, and eye contact with the audience. Things I can work on are limiting my “um”s and not getting jammed up after talking for a while. After saying a couple sentences or a paragraph, I get caught up because I start to get more nervous. To help me improve, I’ll try to practice more which will make me less nervous because I will be more accustomed to speaking in front of an audience. To limit my “um”s I’ll work on remembering what I’m going to say and focus on what I’m trying to say more. I definitely think that I will improve on this and sharpen my public speaking skills which will help me in many situations including the senior speech.

Bad TED Talk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAFcV7zuUDA I think this is a bad ted talk because the guy is smiling the whole time which makes it uncomfortable as a viewer. He also laughs at his own jokes sometimes which is awkward.

Who am I?

Hi, my name is Giovanni Filippone. I’m 18 years old and I’m from Darien, Connecticut. My parents are divorced but I spend an equal amount of time at each house. While my Dad lives in Darien, my Mom lives in New Canaan. I have a 20 year old brother that attends the College of Charleston but he’s nothing like me. He doesn’t play any sports, is tall, and very skinny. When I was born, my family and lived in Fairfield, CT but the commute to New York was a lot so we moved to Darien.

Something that is very important to me is Baseball. Ever since i was 2, my dad would have me and my brother playing all kinds of sports outside in our backyard but we always seemed to gravitate towards Baseball. I enjoy competing and winning as much as anyone. Although I love playing, I’m not a big watcher like most people. You won’t catch me going out of my way to watch a game on tv or have a big party or celebration, it’s just not that exciting to me especially compared to actually playing.

Food is the most important and enjoyable thing to me. If I’m having a bad day, a nice italian dish can easily fix everything or even some chinese food. When I’m bored I usually just eat. My dad’s side of the family is italian and a lot of them live in Sicily. Whenever they come over for a holiday, they are about 30 people and an insane amount of food which is my favorite part.

Another interesting thing about me is how diverse I am. I like doing many different things and expanding my horizon. For example, up until high school I played 5 sports. Now I only play baseball competitively but I still play Golf at my Country Club or any sport if I’m with friends. I also listen to almost every genre of music. I like everything from classic rock and old style italian music to rap, country, and other modern music. I also eat many different foods, I don’t care what it is for the most part as long as it tastes good.

I’m taking this course to be a more confident speaker and to learn more about communication skills in general.
